Global warming is a worldwide concern, not just yours, not just mine but ours and the entire world. Everyone is affected by global warming and its effect on the iceberg in the Antarctic. While ice melting on the Antarctic may not seem too much of a danger to the ocean level because only one-seventh or one-tenth is in the surface, the global warming effect on melting of inland snow caps in other regions is actually what may cause nations to sink.
This is because the water that will come out when these snow caps melt will go to the ocean. If ocean level rises due to ice melting in other regions, localities that lie near the sea level will surely be affected.
Have you seen the news lately? Huge floods in areas where it does not usually happen is killing hundreds of people, putting properties under water and devastating the economy.
If we do not stop global warming, and ice melting will happen in many regions, the world we live in today will no longer be livable as it was many years ago.
As mentioned by Jim Hansen in his report on global warming, the current carbon dioxide emission worldwide is already beyond acceptable norms. The current 386 ppm carbon dioxide emission worldwide which is rising at an average of 2 ppm per year will put the world and our lives in jeopardy.
What can we do? Singly, we cannot do anything but in groups, we can make a difference.
What needs to happen is for the world to control carbon dioxide emission and methane gas excretion. In this situation, the bigger and more advanced economies in the world are the once who contribute hugely to carbon dioxide emission. Thus, if these countries can control their carbon dioxide emission to a much lower level. It is possible that the worldwide carbon dioxide emission may hit the acceptable level of 350 ppm.
However, this is not easy. Difficult as it is, the world leaders has to do something about it. Control carbon dioxide emission and we delay ice melting.
If we cannot eradicate ice melting entirely, being able to control global warming will help extend our lives on earth.
Ice melting has caused damages to properties, lives and economies, if we can stop it, then, growth will reach the third world countries and possibly make this world livable longer.
If we cannot stop global warming and ice melting, we put the lives of people in low lying areas at risk.
Maldives, Shanghai and Lagos, to name a few, would be underwater. These areas lie only around 6 feet above sea level. If ice melting continues in inland ice caps, we expect the sea level to increase by about 60 meters or 200 feet. You may no longer see the areas that lie 6 feet above sea level or any other areas near this number.
On the other side of the world, lands along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States may likewise suffer the same fate, falling under the sea.
Do you want this to happen? October 24 is the day to take part in rallying behind the 350 number. Take part in this day to make sure that we will be able to provide our children a livable life when they grow older.
