November Nine is the title of the World Series of Poker for the year 2009. As it appears in the records, November Nine is too true to its name. While the final table started in Saturday which is a November 7, the heads up game between Joe Cada and Darwin Moon was done on the Monday following, which is November 9.
Likewise, did you know that the first November Niner to be eliminated, James Akenhead lost his pocket 3’s against Kevin Schaffel’s pocket 9’s?
The final table, as mentioned started on November Nine, and Joe Cada won over Darwin Moon with pocket 9’s.
Irony, isn’t it? Anyway, while November Nine is actually coined because of the top nine finishers in the July Final Event of the WSOP, it was probably sheer luck or designed by fate that the number 9 dominated the entire game.
Anyway, because there is much hullaballoo with the World Series of Poker and the magic nine, we wanted you to know how the story goes before the youngest poker world champion triumphed against players more than double his age, and players who have played the game even before he was born.
Let us move on with the story coming from the Ninth placer down to Joe Cada, the 21 year old World Series of Poker Champion.
James Akenhead
James Akenhead is the first to be eliminated in the November Nine final table which started Saturday. He lost his final game with pocket 3’s against Kevin Schaffel’s pocket 9’s. As the first to be eliminated, he brought home $1.26 million.
Kevin Schaffel
Kevin is the next to be eliminated. He bet all-in against Eric Buchman who hit quads of King making his pocket aces unable to bring him to the top of the game. He brought home about $1.3 Million in cash prize.
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey, the most popular Poker pro of today, resigned to the seventh place when his A-K hole card lost to the A-Q card of Darwin Moon when another Q hit the flop. Phil Ivey won $1.4 Million from the 2009 WSOP.
Steven Begleiter
Steven Begleiter entered the finals with third highest chips. Fate however got in the way when he was eliminated when Darwin Moon caught an ace beating Begleiter’s pocket queens. This former executive from Bearn Stearns brought home $1.58 million in cash.
Jeff Shulman
Jeff Shulman is another seasoned pro among the November Niners. He is the Editor of Card Player Magazine but the magic 9 hit on him when Antoine Saout’s A-9 hit another 9 on the flop making Shulman’s pocket 7’s an underdog. Jeff Shulman placed fifth with $1.95 million in prize.
Eric Buchman
Eric Buchman was among the chip leaders throughout the game but Antoine Saout left him short-chipped before he faced his final table with Darwin Moon. His A-5 was unable to hold up to Darwin Moon’s K-J. Buchman took home $2.5 million when he placed fourth in the November Nine.
Antoine Saout
Young French poker pro, Antoine Saout commanded a good game his entire time in the November Nine. However, the face up of the youngest in the field eliminated Antoine Saout, when Joe Cada’s A-K hit the river with a King making the pocket 8’s of Antoine Saout an underdog. The young French poker pro brought home $3.5 million in cash prize and the third place position in the game.
Darwin Moon
Darwin Moon the chip leader when he entered the final table on Saturday. However, his chip stack is an underdog on the heads up game with 59 million chips against a whooping 135,950,000 stack of Joe Cada. The game was some ups and downs but finally, Q-J suited hole cards of Darwin Moon did not improve with the flop, the turn and the river. He lost against the youngest and now the most exciting poker professional in the name of Joe Cada who triumphed with his pocket 9’s. Darwin Moon will bring home $5.18 million in cash and the second place position.
Joe Cada
Joe Cada is the youngest poker player to win the World Championship of the 2009 World Series of Poker. It is entitled November Nine and thus, the card that beat the hand of Darwin Moon was a pair of 9’s. Winning a whopping $8.55 million in cash and the much coveted WSOP bracelet, he did this at age 21.
He did not only topple over the rest of the eight players in the final table but he toppled over the record of Peter Eastgate as the youngest poker player to win the WSOP championship. Eastgate was 23 when he won the 2003 WSOP.
Surely, November Nine is too true to its name for the 2009 World Series of Poker.
