Draw Poker is probably the first poker variant every player will learn. While this is true, to give some excitement into this traditional poker variant, casinos have given the game a little twist by playing it with blinds. At home games however, draw poker is being played with ante.

Rules of Draw Poker
• Players are dealt a complete hand.
• The game is played with fixed limit, pot limit or no-limit. In this page, we will discuss only fixed limit.
• This game is usually played in casinos with blinds. The small blind bets half of the minimum and the big blind bets the minimum.
• The blinds are the players seated immediately on the left of the Dealer.
• Players have the option to improve their hands by discarding cards and drawing new cards.
• In other variants like double-draw or triple-draw, players are allowed to exchange card up to three rounds to improve their hand, each round of card exchanges will be followed by a betting round.
• Other variants of draw poker differ in betting structure. Some of these variants are discussed in other pages in this site.
• The best 5-card hand wins the pot.
How to Play Draw Poker
1. The dealer shuffles the cards and cuts the deck somewhere in the middle.
2. Before cards are dealt, the forced bet from the blinds will have to be posted. The small blind betting half of the minimum bet and the big blind bets the minimum. If the game is $5-$10, then the small blind bets $3 and the big blind bets $5.
3. The dealer will now deal every player a complete hand starting from the player on his left.
4. After the cards are dealt, the first round of betting starts. The betting will start from the player on the left of the big blind. In this case, the player on the left of the big blind is called under the gun. This is because he will have to bet with minimal information about the strength of the card of his opponents. Players are advantageous on the table if they can observe the betting pattern of their opponents that will give them the information on the strength of the cards of his opponents.
5. Thus, the players in the later position will have an advantage over the players in the early position. This condition makes draw poker game positional in nature.
6. After the first round of betting, the players may now exchange their cards to improve their hand. They have the option to exchange up to three cards from their hand.
7. After drawing new cards, the final round of betting will happen.
8. In the showdown, the best 5-card hand wins the pot.
This is how Draw Poker is played in casinos. If the game is played at home, there will be no blinds rather an ante will be posted before the cards are dealt. In this case, the first player seated immediately to the left of the dealer will start the first betting round.
