Billabong is a poker variation that is somewhat related to Texas Hold’em. However, many poker players in Australia say that Billabong is a variation of Manila. Manila is a poker variation where you will only play with 32 cards. The deuce to seven cards will be stripped from the deck.
However, Billabong, as the game play shows is more of a Texas Hold’em variation because you will be playing with all 52 cards in the deck and community cards to be shared by all the players.
To understand Billabong better, here are the rules and how the game is played.
Rules of the game
• The rules of the game usually do not limit the players on the field. However, just like in any poker variation eight players can be a comfortable maximum number of players in Billabong.
• There is a “bring it in” bet to be placed by the player with the lowest face up card.
• Since community cards are going to be dealt, from the second round of betting, the player with the highest showing hand will have to start the betting round.
• This game is a community poker game but the flop in Billabong is only two face up cards. The third being the face up card distributed together with the pocket cards.
• The third community card is the turn and the fourth community card is the river. Players will have to form their 5-card hand in combination with the pocket cards and the community cards.
• Before the showdown, three to four betting rounds will happen during the game.
• The best five-card hand in the seven cards available to each player will win the pot.
How Billabong is played?
1. The dealer shuffles the cards and cuts the deck.
2. The dealer will now draw three cards to each player on the field. He will start the first card to the player immediately to his left moving clockwise. The three cards will be 2 facedown cards then 1 face up card. The face up cards will determine who the first bettor will be.
3. The lowest face up card will start the betting round. His initial bet is called the “bring it in” bet.
4. After all the players have placed their bets, the flop will be dealt. The flop in Billabong is only 2 face up cards placed at the center of the table.
5. In the second round of betting, the highest card showing in combination with the flop will be the first player to make his bet first. Then, the other players moving clockwise will make their action. The different actions will be either to call (bet the same amount as the previous bettor), to raise (increase the betting) or to fold (withdraw from the game).
6. The dealer will now deal the third community card or the turn. Then, another betting round will happen. Again, the first bet will be coming from the player with the highest showing hand.
7. The dealer will now deal the fourth community card called the river, immediately followed by the final betting round.
8. If there are more than 2 players left in the pot, then, the showdown will happen and the best 5-card hand from the seven cards available to each other will win the pot. If there is only one player left, then he pockets the pot.
