Understanding poker rules will never be complete if you fail to understand the jargon used in a poker table. Thus, part of learning the poker rules and strategies are poker jargons.

Poker Betting Jargons

In this page, you will learn some of the poker betting terms used. These are the basic betting jargons, through the years, there may be new once and thus, we will update this page from time to time.

Here we go –

Ante

This is explained before but we will repeat it to give you a better understanding of this term. Ante is the amount of money every player needs to put in to start the game. It is not yet considered a bet, thus, it is only half of the minimum bet. It will start of the pot to makeup a healthy pot.

Blind Bet

This is the first set of bets placed by the players seated on the blinds position. They are called players on the blind position because they are required to post half and the minimum bet even before the hole cards are dealt.

Buy-In

Buy-in is the amount of money required to enter a tournament. This is also a term used for the money you should have to sit down at a poker table.

Family Pot

Family pot is the term used when the pot is healthy because all players remain in the game. Family pot because all of them contributing to the pot.

Bump

Bump is sometimes used to refer to a raise. The phrase “Bump it to ten” means that the player is raising the bet to $10.

Kick it

The term is the same as bump. When one says, “kick it up to ten” this is because from the $5 bet, the player is raising it for another $5 kicking the bet or raising to $10.

Limp

This means the player is betting only the minimum or calling the previous bet. The small blind usually bets half of the minimum bet. Thus, when the small blind meets or calls the bet of the big blind, he is considered as “limping in.”

Post

To place or put in a bet. This is often the term used for the bet or money the blinds are placing because they are forced.

Stack

This is the amount of chips you have in the game. You may be called “short stacked” if there are only few chips you own in a given game. Likewise, short stacked is a term used when a player ended up withdrawing because the last raise will not afford him to call due to shortage of chips. He is short stacked and thus cannot make a bet anymore.

Call or Bet

This is a term used when you are merely matching the bet of the player before you.
