Poker is an exciting card game. This card game has been around since the olden days. However, even with this fact, many young poker players are alienated on the poker table because they are not familiar with some poker jargons.
Thus, in this page, we will discuss Poker Position Jargons, to help you understand professional players as they communicate around the poker table.
Button, Buck or Dealer
This is the person in charge of dealing the cards. He may either be a staff of the casino or in other cases; the dealer position rotates around the players on the table. A white round disc is usually placed in front of the person who is designated as the dealer.
Blinds
The small blind in a blinds game play usually plays half of the minimum bet. On the other hand, the big blind posts the second forced bet which should be the minimum bet on the table. Again, the blinds position rotates around the table moving clockwise. The blinds are usually seated on the left of the dealer.
Under the Gun
This is the player seated on the left of the big blind. In cases where there are no blinds, under the gun position will be on the left of the dealer. This position is called under the gun because this player has to bet or make an action either to check, call or bet without any idea of the card held by the rest of the players on the table.
Usually, players have to assess the strength of the cards held by other players by looking at their betting pattern. In the case of under the gun position, the information on betting pattern of the players is not yet available.
Early Position
Early position players are the blinds and under the gun. This is because they have to act before the other players on the table are going to act.
Middle Position
Middle position would be the position of players away from the dealer. In an 8-player table, the middle position will be players 5 and 6. They are next to act after the early position. They will act with some information about the strength of the early position players.
Late Position
Late position players in a poker table would be player 7 and the Dealer. This is because they are the last group of players to act or make a bet. They have some information on the strength of the card other players are holding on the table.
This is done by assessing the betting pattern of the other players. They are usually at an advantage position when they place their bets.
Calling Station
This player is called calling station because he often calls or matches the bet of the players. He does this even with strong hand or weak hand. Thus, they are calling station because they call almost all the time.
Cow and Horse
The cow is the player that is backed by another in the poker table. He will split his winning with the horse if he makes it. Horse on the other hand is the person that is backing the cow.
Bank or House
The bank sometimes called House is the person responsible in distributing chips, paying winners or monitoring buy-ins.
These are the positional jargons commonly used in poker card rooms and casinos. There are other jargons in a poker table and we discus them next.
